The New School: Day Ten - Jon Phonics

Last up on the New School (and by no means least) is another member of the Den familia Jon "Ill Clinton" Phonics. I first got put onto Jon back in '07 ,he had worked with a buddy of mine English and was up for collabin, after the postman stole the first copy I was hit up with a beat tape (which sounded more like a dope instrumental album) and after a few false starts (1) with joints getting scooped up (2) before I could claim them (3) we eventually managed to lay a track down (4)!! (and hopefully more in the future!!), anyway if you dont know then get to know, but following Louis Den I got no idea how you've slept on the kid! onwards with Luigi's write up/

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Pump - Jon Phonics (THE NEW SCHOOL: DAY 10)

Since the release of 2008's Half Past Calm 1, 23 year old London based Producer, Jon Phonics has progressed into one of the most versatile talents from across the pond.

His latest release on YNR Productions 'Half Past Calm 2' is a showcase of his production work ranging from rugged boom-bap beats, smooth, melodic soulful records to progressive electronic heaters and featuring some of the UK's most notorious rappers. More of which can be heard on his 2009 instrumental release 'Jonathan's Beats & Piece's'.

Although having released 2 full length LP's, in less than 6 months, be on thelookout for more projects from Jon Phonics in 2010. Including productions with fellow Louis Den heads Jeekay, Beat Butcha, and Jaisu, and an LP with YNR label mate, Jyager. Jon also has productions on future releases from Jehst, Skandal, Black The Ripper, Verb T & hungarian rapper 'Speak', to name just a few.

Keep your eyes and ears open for this man and be sure to peep his music available for free via jonphonics.bandcamp.com.

The New School: Day Nine - BUG

BUG BUG BUG, what can I say...beast on the boards, constantly evolving and winner of the 2009 league; 2010 marks the year he's out to leave a mark with his few releases surfacing!, check LuigiBo's write up..

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Indica - BUG (THE NEW SCHOOL: DAY 9)

By keeping up with the 2010 Louis Den Online League's Beat Battles, I stumbled upon this insane producer by the name of BUG.

BUG has definitely earned the title "Producer" in my opinion. He is able to create atmospheres with his beats as well as make something that just plain knocks! No matter what style he's displaying, he never falls short of being dope. I don't believe it was a surprise to anyone when BUG was crowned the 2009 LDBB League Champ seeing as he was consistent the whole way through.

BUG also has recently been included in a few compilations such as "Jus Like Music Records: Oscillations" and even was kind enough to give away his debut single "Cosmic Lab/20 winks" for free on his own bandcamp. Being only 24, he'll definitely be around for a while and you will want to keep you eyes and ears open for his work.

The New School: Day Eight - Myke Forte

Myke's a good dude!!!, he first came to our attention back in the first Beat Cypher from October 2008, what was crazy was he came to the night armed with beats and his MPC2500 just in case there was an opportunity to get down; since then he built with myself and Kela and even took a trip down to London (solo) after work (he was based in Milton Keynes at the time) just to play some beats with us a the producers event "Beat Shed".

He quickly started being a regular in the Den sessions and is now a permanent stay in Louis Den, here's Luigi's take on his beatmaking talents!

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

The ComeUp (Hunger) - Myke Forte (THE NEW SCHOOL: DAY 8)

Unfortunately, I didn't find out about Myke Forte until the tail end of 2009 with the release of his Zodiac : Aries beat tape. Once I gave the tape a listen I was instantly blow away and found one of my new favorite producers.

Listening to Forte's beats, you can definitely sense a strong Pete Rock influence. Myke is excellent at crafting mellow beats that sure to soothe your soul. Also being a member of the Louis Den movement, it's only a matter of time before Myke gets proper recognition.

Be sure to catch up on his Zodiak series of beat tapes and keep a look out for future volumes as the continue to get better and show different sides of Myke.

The New School: Day Seven - S-TYPE

I've had the pleasure of knowing S-TYPE for a minute now and its sure as hell dope to see a whole bunch of heads all come up and begin to break in on the industry and yep S-TYPE is one of em check out LuigiBo's write up below as yet another LDBB head is featured on his New School series..

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Award Winning - S-Type (THE NEW SCHOOL: DAY 7)

Scottish producer S-Type released his infectious jazz influenced debut hip-hop 12", 'Soul For Your Stereo' featuring highly respected Detroit rapper Finale, at the ripe age of 18. Since then the 2008 Louisden league champion's beats have developed and progressed, drawing inspiration from all coasts and genres of hip hop as well as the myriad sub genres of electronica, leading to a powerful yet musical sound constructed from perfectly chopped samples and creatively played elements.

This has led to recognition from respected sources, such as Dart Adams'selection of S-Type as one of his 'producers to watch' and his invitation, along with fellow Louisden alumni Jaisu (also his Tartan Bully cohort), Bug and Kelakovski, to appear at Red Bull Music Academy's recent Glasgow showcase.

S-Type's beats definitely hold a lot of replay value and, with a beat tape due out soon along with production credits for Laws, Reks, Joe Scudda, Jay Rock and the forthcoming Grind Wit Me featuring Sheek Louch on Tek's Autumn album released on Duck Down, plenty more soul for your stereo is guaranteed.

The New School: Day Six - Inphy

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Inphy - Jay Z 99 Problems Remix (Instrumental)

This guy is the best kept secret out of everyone on this list; banging out all the way from the Czech Republic we have Inphy.

With a great ear for samples and drums you're sure to love his sound! Inphy is most definitely a graduate from the school of Pete Rock and is definitely going to be one of the torch carriers for the "classic boom-bap" sound in Hip-Hop.

His remix of Little Brother's "Life Of the Party" sounds like it easily could have been the original. From the drums, to the samples, all the elements hit the mark and it compliments the accapella perfectly in my opinion! At the young age of 19, Inphy is only going to get better from here! Get familiiar now!

The New School: Day Five - Jaisu

Jaisu - Kosmos (f)/(st)ans will recognise it from his opening blap in beat cypher 2!

Aite well continuing on LuigiBo's New School series (which he is running over at hiphop hypedog and we're dual posting here). Its the first of a few Louis Den residents that made the list in the form of Edinburgh heatmaker JAISU!. Lets see what they had to say about dude! - kos.

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

This time we head across the pond to Edinburgh, Scotland to hear Louis Den regular Jaisu. If you're like me, you were lucky enough to randomly run across Jaisu's beat tape series on Youtube. If this is your first time hearing of him you're in for a treat!

Jaisu's deft, creative chopping skills, neck breaking drums and deep warm basslines combine to give his beats a unique, captivating feel which will appeal to both boom bap purists and fans of a more modern, forward looking, sample based hip hop sound equally.

The shooter and editor of Jaisu's beat tape series, ab0181, and the founder of Louis Den, Kosyne, featured him on their production DVD magazines: BCD 1 & 2. These DVDs, along with his production work for Sha Stimuli, Marvwon, Punchline, General Steele and on his fellow Beat Fanatic member Slopfunkdust's 'Smoker's Choice' project, are great starting points while you wait for his forthcoming, highly anticipated, beat tape to be released.

The New School: Day Four - Nameless

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Nameless - Emerald Dreams

Nameless comes from Flint, Michigan. Nameless is an extremely versatile and talented producer who gives another reason for me to believe that there really is something in the water in Michigan.

Nameless can do it all, from soul samples, video game samples, and originals that bang! Nameless even is dope in the fields of art and graphic design. I strongly suggest that you go to his Bandcamp site and just download everything. He has tons of bangers on all of his beat tapes, you won't be disappointed!

Also, be on the lookout for his new tribute project "Don't Hurt Em Teddy P" dropping this Summer! On top of that he also has, "CORDLESS" [B. Corder + NAMELESS], and "16-Bit: Bonus Stages" and "HellCassell" planned for this sumer also.

The New School: Day Three - J.Bizness

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

J. Bizness - Why

Championing a West Coast vibe; Ontario, CA's own J. Bizness is finally getting the shine he deserves.

J. Bizness has been making beats for 13 years and has scored placments with Trek Life, Little Brother, Buff 1, and Jimetta Rose. If you're looking for beats to just vibe out to, look no further than J.Bizness.

Jon Phonics - Half Past Calm 2 (free download)

Half Past Calm 2 is finally here and boy is it serious!. The blurb follows but lemme give you my input!!.

Half Past Calm 2 is the follow up to Jon's free LP he dropped a couple years back. For those who havent heard the free projects he's dropped since are in for treat as you'll hear how Jon's sound has evolved over the past couple; still maintaining the dirt, dust and grit found in his original LP theres the addition of his future funk elements as he encorporates more synth work and space age bounce into his signature sound found in his league heaters over last autumn and the free winter beat tape Jonathans Beats & Peices.

Ok, here comes the official text!.

The New School: Day Two - B.Lewis

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Hurt Hurt Go Away - B.Lewis (THE NEW SCHOOL: DAY 2)

Lewis is a producer from San Jose, California and 1/3 of the group Alora along with RU and Insightful. Lewis started making beats about a year and a half ago and has picked up pretty fast! With a forte in sampling dreamy doo-wop and classic jazz records and his hooks that have that "Take em to Church" feeling to them.

As a heads up, Lewis' new one is dropping in a couple weeks its called Mercury Backburner.

The New School: Day One - Xperiment

* the following post is a summary/swipe of "THE NEW SCHOOL" series penned by LuigiBo87 and posted at hiphophypedog, Louis Den are covering the articles as LDBB fam are also featured!.

Xperiment - Wait & See

After moving to Colorado from San Antonio in 2000, Xperiment found a love for Hip Hop music and began to try his hand at beat making. After 9 years of hard work and self teaching, he's finally ready to take over with his unique style of beats.

Having already worked with artists such as Sunkenstate, Curren$y, Braille, and more, Xperiment is definitely one to keep your eyes and ears on!

The New School from LuigiBo87

Music head and blap aficionando LuigiBo87 has been dipping his toes into producer centred blogs/releases/compilations via the hiphophypedog blog and twitter, bringing you his Best Of Beats 2009 compilation at the top of this year to his Dust Of The NES compilation which featured 8-bit / chiptune inspired beats.

This time round (in association with hypedog) he plans to bring you 10 producers to watch for 2010, with some of the list containing Louis Den affiliates we figured we'd may as well mirror his posts here and let you know who else you should be watching out for and hopefully put you onto some new producers!.

lets goo.

Homework 61 - I Usually Rock Around 120 BPM

Ok the Little Brother sample flip challenge was dope, a lot of usual names missing from the mix (come on people!!) but still some great offerings including a full remix EP of little brother accas/samples from Evil Needle..crazy!, ok so this time round we're going to a homework suggestion and is a lot more open to interpretation and not necessarily sample based..lets do it.

Homework 61 - I Usually Rock About 120 BPM

*challenge suggested by S-TYPE

This week we figured going for something a little more different; poached form the "homework suggestions thread" over at the louisden forums S-TYPE suggested having a set BPM challenge rather than a sample theme or flip.

So why not try it out!, the rules are simple; make a beat at this particular tempo!!..theres a lot of scope for some cross genre business (thats not an invite to turn some europop or hiphouse!), just try and keep it funky, to inspire you here are some 110+ BPM hiphop joints you would have heard in the past (just a random selection

LINKS/RESOURCES
A few songs 110 BPM+ to get some ideas!!
De La Soul - A Rollerskating Jam Named Saturday
De La Soul - Me Myself and I
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth - The Creator
Wu Tang - Gravel Pit
EPMD Ft LL - Rampage
Joe Budden ft Busta Rhymes - Fire

RULES

To turn in a fresh beat (samples/non sampled anythings cool) which is at 120 BPM, email entries to homework@louisden.com, ideally attach the mp3 straight we dont really want to be messing with download wait limits and captcha codes!.

New Homework #60 - Little Brother Reflips

Thanks to everyone who came out to Beat Cypher 9 last thursday, we were joined by Eric Lau, Beat Butcha, Metabeats and Louisden's own Jeekay who tore the house down!!, we'll be returning in June with more beat cypher action so stay tuned for news of that (and the footage/dvd...give us time!)

Now, back to the beat battles. It's been a while since we last had one, mostly down to the release of Behind Closed Doors volume 2 and getting the beat cypher geared up for 2010. But we're back with more challenges, starting with this one (if you hadn't realised, the league is now closed, we are on challenges until the 2010 league begins).

Homework 60 - "Little Brother Reflips"

Last week (as well as the unfortunate passing of Guru from Gangstarr :(, RIP!) saw the release of Little Brother's album "Left Back". Their final set contains beats from Khrysis, Denaun Porter, S1, Caleb and more. To mark Phonte and Big Pooh bowing out, we figured why not re-visit some of the samples used by their various producers over the years?

RULES

Dig out a Little Brother sample used in any of their songs over the course of their career (these are LB releases only, not solo projects), standard Louis' Den rules apply, synths are OK, sample must form main part of your beat.

DEADLINE

Sunday 2nd May 2010, submit beats to homework@louisden.com (please email the beats directly, links make the beat collection process a bit tricky so avoid it if possible)....so thats EMAIL to homework@louisden.com no forum PM no myspace message...EMAIL!!.

LINKS/RESOURCES

Google is your friend!, but heres some starting places, although we hate to sample snitch..check the text file - http://www.sendspace.com/file/t4mqvr

and remember you've got the mixtapes "And Justus For All" and the "Gangsta Grillz" releases to dig up samples from if you know them!.

get to it...we're back!.

Man its getting harder and harder to rank the cyphers..the standard is just soooooooo dope.

Beat Cypher 09 Spotlight - Eric Lau

Ok so despite the beat cypher being done, we still had one more spotlight blog to post, Meta's didnt arrive but Eric's was left so here go!.

1) Hey!!, please introduce yourself to everybody; let us know who you are what you do and how long you've been doing it!.
I'm Eric Lau, im a producer and i make music from a hip hop perspective regardless of genre. Been producing for around 7-8 years.

2) Was there a defining moment (event / hearing a record etc) that led you into making beats / becoming a producer?.
Yes! My friend lending Hip Hop Ejay to me when I was at Uni! Premier/Pete Rock made me want to become a beat maker. Dilla made me want to become a producer.

3) What was your first peice of equipment and what were those beats like?, any interesting stories about things were doing to begin with / finding your feet?
First equipment was a standard PC with Hip Hop Ejay and a plastic microphone. Beats were kinda jiggy and a lot more commercial sounding.

4) Whats the one bit of advice youd give to anyone starting out today?
Have fun with it!

5) What can heads expect from you at LOUIS DEN BEAT CYPHER?
Me basically! I havent had many hip hop releases recently so expect to hear some harder stuff.

FYI..eric SMACKED IT!!..footage coming soon.

RIP Guru of Gangstarr

  • DJ Premier (L) and Guru (R) - Gangstarr

  • Fat shout to Guru of Gangstarr who unfortunately passed away on Monday from Cancer, he had been previously in bad health following a publized coma earlier in March (with reports of a partial recovery early April) but the news of his death still comes as a shock.

Guru formed one half of the legendary duo "Gangstarr" along with DJ Premier on cuts/production; they dropped nothing but classic LP's through duration of the 90's, following their last full set "Ownerz" (2003) if you ignore the contract fulfilling best of "Mass Appeal" (2007); Guru went on to seek outside production releasing another 2 solo albums and followups to his "Jazzmatazz" series which fused elements of hiphop/jazz.

If you are unfamiliar with the music of Gangstarr; then its never too late!! go do some homework and hunt down the classics, I expect Cro to spin some niceness at tomorrows cypher!

    Thank you for the music!

    LOUISDEN SALUTE!
    REST IN PEACE!

Beat Cypher 09 Spotlight - Beat Butcha

Next up we've got Beat Butcha!, formerly based in the UK and now living in the Netherlands; I've been hearing butchas blaps for quite a few years now from his earlier material with UK group Paragon, right up to his international placements of the current day..proof that hard work produces results!! check the quick spotlight and free links at the end!.

    1) Hey!!, please introduce yourself to everybody; let us know who you are what you do and how long you've been doing it!.
The names Beat Butcha, uk producer based in the netherlands, been making beats for about 11-12 years, seriously (release wise) for about 5-6 years. Have worked & released music with alot of ppl, UKwise: Jehst, Klashnekoff, Roots Manuva, Stig, Plan B, Ghetts, Wretch 32, Scorcher, just to name a few, USwise: Havoc (mobb deep), Sean Price (bootcamp), Red Cafe, Sha Stimuli, Infamous Mobb, Immortal Technique, Agallah and had more placements coming which I dont want to disclose incase the demos dont get finished...

    2) Was there a defining moment (event / hearing a record etc) that led you into making beats / becoming a producer?.
I always liked rhythm & beats, I got into djing around the same time that I started making beats so it was a natural progression, theres no defining moment, I just decided to try it out one day on my shitty computer.

    3) What was your first peice of equipment and what were those beats like?, any interesting stories about things were doing to begin with / finding your feet?
First equip was my first computer in 98 which cost about 200 quid and it was shit, I used Cool Edit 96 lmao, I eventually saved up for a mpc2000 and my first beats werent actually too bad they were way too quantized and too lofi quality wise but i had good samples and i knew the quantizing was a problem so I soon fixed that. I produced by first vocal track after about a year which eventually came out, obviously Im alot better now lol.

    4) Whats the one bit of advice youd give to anyone starting out today?
Creatively, get ur skill levels up and stay creative, try and be unique in some way, try and be as musical as u can be.
Business wise this is one of the hardest grinds u can imagine, there's nothing simple about it, so think very carefully if u want to make this a career. Don't think you're gunna make any decent long term money just selling the beats u make, even to ur american idols, coz the majority of them aint paying decently, u have to have fingers in lots of pies.
Trust me I know, the real money is the trades (self employed electricians & plumbers)

    5) What can heads expect from you at LOUIS DEN BEAT CYPHER?
Ill be wearing a disguise, so rappers wont reckognize me lmao....
Im bringin exclusive jawns u prolly aint heard from me before, some of which are beats from forthcoming placements with some of the US artists im working with.

Beat Cypher 09 Spotlight - Jeekay

Okay so I just posted the beat cypher info below just in case you didn't know (it has been on the right hand side for the last month or so but hey!).

So yeah continuing the beat cypher tradition we've got another set of Beat Cypher Spotlight blogs which profile each of the producers that'll be taking part in the showcase.

First up is youngest in charge Jeekay who was introduced to the ldbb fold via Jon Phonics waaay back in our 2008 league; since then he's been killing the weekly challenges and 2009 league contributing flamers week in week out!!, he chops it up below.

1)Hey!!, please introduce yourself to everybody; let us know who you are what you do and how long you've been doing it!.
Easy folks, i'm Jeekay, i'm 20 years old and I live in London. I've
been making beats for just over three years and i've been involved
with the Louisden family for about two!

    2) Was there a defining moment (event / hearing a record etc) that led you into making beats / becoming a producer?.
I remember hearing 'Defeat' by Afu Ra whilst watching a skate video
when I was about 15 and being absolutely mesmerized, to the point
where I was rewinding the tape over and over again just to hear the
beat. That was the moment that sparked my interest in Hip Hop, which
in turn made me want me to get a set of turntables. I lost interest in
dj'ing when I was about 17, but by this time i'd familiarized myself
with guys like Pete Rock and Preemo and I decided it was time to start
    making beats myself.

    3) What was your first peice of equipment and what were those beats like?, any interesting stories about things were doing to begin with / finding your feet?
I started out on a demo version of Fruity Loops on my parent's PC in
their spare room. My dad bought a turntable with the intention of
recording his LPs to MP3, but I started using it to record records
into FL and eventually I bought my own PC and set up a makeshift
studio in my room with the help of an old hi-fi my mum's friend gave
me! I got alot of helpful feedback from Jon Phonics when I first
started out and I used to burn new beats to CD and play them in a
friend of mine's car during breaks at school. I'd always try to make
the next CD better than the last which really helped me develop my
    sound.

    4) Whats the one bit of advice youd give to anyone starting out today?
It's been said a million times, but just do you. Whether you feel like
making something with someone like Styles P in mind or if you prefer
making beats that sound like they'd work on an Omarion album, don't
hesitate to experiment. I have weeks where all I want to do is make
smooth stuff, but then the next week I feel inspired to make something
a bit tougher and I find it's best to just go with the flow.

    5) What can heads expect from you at LOUIS DEN BEAT CYPHER?
Hopefully a few decent beats, played by someone who looks like he'd
probably fit in more comfortably at a wine bar than a beat cypher.

  • Louis Den Beat Cypher THIS THURSDAY!

It's been a while since the last beat cypher with GHOSTTOWN, WIZARD, CHEMO and BUDGIE...December '09 to be exact, but after a short break we're back for our run of events for 2010 starting with 22nd April!!.

ON THE BOARDS This time round we've got some smashers onboard for the beat cypher which'll be set to be nothing but a night of killer blaps!!.

ERIC LAU - Having released a few projects including an EP with DUDLEY PERKINS , a solo LP on Ubquity and more, Eric is one to watch with constant name checks from the likes of BENJI B and GILES PETERSON as well as production work for ODDISEE, GUILTY SIMPSON, LUPE FIASCO and more!! he's bound to tear the beat cypher up with soulful headnodders and screwface BANGERS!.

BEAT BUTCHA - A staple on the UK cricuit for a few years and now based in the Netherlands, Butcha has becoming more of a target across the waters with production landed for HAVOC of MOBB DEEP, SEAN PRICE, LIL ETO as well as placements over these shores with TERRA FIRMA, KLASHNEKOFF, JEHST, GHETTO, SONNYJIM, MICALL PARKNSUN and more!...get your screwfaces ready!.

METABEATS - Got heads ringing with is debut LP METAPHYSICAL which dropped back in '07, since then he's produced joints for his label mates at ASSOCIATED MINDS, currently he's getting to release the SLEDGEHAMMER KISSES LP with MUDMOUF as well as being busy with other production work and international DJ spots!.

Finally, reppin for LOUSDEN we've got the underdog with the IMMENSE sound....JEEKAY!!, having been down with the LOUISDEN movement since our 2008 league and constantly showing his face (travelling from london to boot!!) we've given the last slot to JEEKAY, currently honing his craft he's putting the finishing touches to a beat tape release with his production camp ILL RHYTHMIKZ (producers JON PHONICS, JJ MALONE), he's been a face of many a bucks fizz beat battle and open beats so we know Jeekz has no problem hanging with big dogs!.

ON THE MIC We've got the legend that is JEHST aka BILLY BRIMSTONE aka THE DRIFTER, you know the name you know the projects over the years and now he's blessing brum again (his first time since our first beat cypher back in OCT '08) to take to the mic in emcee form, he's already blessed us with bangers back in the first cypher and now we'll get a taste of some brand new material (and hopefully a sneak peep of the upcoming DRAGON OF AN ORDINARY FAMILY album dropping this year on YNR)

Joining Jehst will be a mashup of artists from the dope Cardiff based label ASSOCIATED MINDS, with their in house producer METABEATS taking part in the showcase we figured we'd get a couple heads from the camp to bless us with bars also..but they've done one better and are bringing most of the squad with them!!! expect nothing but madness fromsome the emcess on the label (RALPH RIP SHIT, RUFFSTYLZ, SKAMMA) as well as some beatbox action from the legend that is BEATBOX FOZZY.

OPEN BEATS / BEAT BATTLE / DJ CRO we've got the usual OPEN BEATS where producers of all levels are encouraged to bring some material to test the crowd reaction (3 beats max) and those feeling like they want to take something home can compete in the legendary BUCKS FIZZ BEAT BATTLE where names dawn out of a hat can compete for a bottle of bubbly and bragging rites as the Louis Den Bucks Fizz Beat Battle Winner!!...finally it wouldn't be a beat cypher with our very own DJ CRO providing the backdrop of hip-hop beats, breaks and treats inbetween the nights action.

*ARRIVE EARLY TO SIGN UP FOR OPEN BEATS, ONLY 3 BEATS MAX PER PRODUCER AND WE MAY HAVE TO REDUCE THAT NUMBER IF THERES A HUGE AMOUNT OF SIGN UPS (prefence is given to newer names)

    * NO MP3 PLAYERS/PHONES/ DATA CD's FOR OPEN BEATS/BATTLE, sorry but its an ache to get all this sorted and the cables/pc's are for the showcased producers only...bring an audio CD or most likely its not happening!!.

Ok Now you know all the details we'll see you there!!

Homework 59 - Martial Arts Week

Ok we're back with our next challenge; the Soundsci remixes are almost ready to drop; the blog and music player will surface today but before we get into that lets drop the next challenge from now so you can hit the lab and get busy!!.

Homework 59 - Martial Arts Week

This week the challenge is to flip music from martial arts films or films with martial arts actors..alright so obviously this is open to interpretation seeing as you've had someone like Jackie Chan in all sorts of randomness but yeah try to respect the theme and keep it authentic..and of course turn in a heater!!.

    RULES

Create a new beat from a martial arts soundtrack/movie or a film; dig your own sample up and feel free to add your own elements BUT as always the sample has to form the main element of the beat, submit your beat to homework@louisden.com (this address has been verified and unless you get a bounce back email we will have received your blap..TAKE TIME TO MAKE SURE YOU'VE SENT THE RIGHT VERSION as we most likely wont check the entrants until its lab time)

    DEADLINE

Beats have to be turned in by MONDAY 15th FEB 2010 18:00, thats right a MONDAY..we're doing this one a little different as we cant hit the lab on sunday..we'll do the usual live stream at http://...com/ldbblive so stay locked to the @louisden twitter for updates when we start.

    Homework 58 - Louis Den x Soundsci Remixes +LDBB @EOW Brixton Fri 22nd Jan

What up world?!, LOUIS DEN BEAT BATTLES IS BACK!!!!!!!, yep after a 3 month (and change) break we're returning with the weekly beat battles, for those who dont know what the deal is we've had the break due to our 2009 league season which is currently wrapping up and started back in August 2009..After almost 400 samples/battles the competition is coming to a close with the final week of voting taking place over at - http://louisden.com/league2009.

We're actually going to be revamping the louisden site and making our own community driven site (a little similar to the league site) in an effort to move the challenges away from Myspace and more to our own platform..but until we actually get the development out the way we'll be using the submission proces detailed below, but first the new challenge!.

Homework 58 - Louis Den x Soundci - Dig For Victory Remixes

We've teamed up with Crate Escape Records to bring you the Louis Den own Soundsci remix comp, ok so who are soundsci?, well its pairing of producer Jonny Cuba (formerly of Dynamic Syncopation) and emcee/producer Audessey (formerly of Mass Influence). Last year they teamed up DJ Cro (louis den beat cypher/crateescape) to release their much talked about EP "Dig For Victory", in making the project DJ Ollie Teeba (Herbaliser) and U-George (Hemisphere) became members of the crew.

Ok so the EP has been out for a little while (limited red vinyl) has has received album of the month in HHC Digital; from the jump the Soundsci guys / Cro had remixes in mind as part of the deluxe package they were selling (T-Shirt, Wax, Poster) came with a limited edition CD with full accapellas of each track, although there is a seperate open remix contest (which closed today), they've gracefully extended the deadline (our homework week) to turn in LDBB flavoured remixes, so thats the aim for this week, SOUNDSCI REMIXES.

    RULES

Check the links below to download a copy of 1 of the 3 soundsci songs to remix, theres "The Remedy", "The Illness" and "Lost And Found" available for the remix treatment, the BPM's of each song are provided in the title so theres no way you can get it wrong, theres no samples provided for this challenge so simply check the original versions out (hit the soundsci bandcamp, links are at the bottom) and see which track you get the best feel for and can bless with your style! Beats chosen by the Soundsci crew will end up on a future release (excellent promo) but be warned theres already been some heaters handed in by non ldbb alumini (seeing as this was an open contest), however we'll no doubt pick our favourites out in the stream/chatroom.

HOW TO LINE UP AN ACAPELLA

Im not even gonna go there!, if you are having trouble doing this then simply submit a beat and let us know which song youd like to remix..if you cant get the vocals on point then DONT BOTHER..nothing hurts the ears more than an out of time remix, if you need to hear the original joints for reference then simply hit the soundsci bandcamp page in the links section.

    DEADLINE

Remixes must reach us by Sunday 24th Jan.

    HOW TO SUBMIT

Email your submissions to homework@louisden.com, make sure the subject and the title of the mp3 let us know who you are and which track you've remixed, we'll be playing the submissions back on the live stream at http://tinyurl.com/ldbblive with Jonny, Audessy and Cro tuning in to check the beats out...DONT SEND BEAT LINKS TO THE MYSPACE THEY WILL BE IGNORED, OF YOU ARENT ABLE TO EMAIL THE BEATS THEN SEND A MESSAGE TO HOMEWORK@LOUISDEN.COM WITH A LINK TO THE BEAT!

    LINKS/RESOURCES

Remix pack feauring x3 soundsci acapellas
Soundsci bandcamp (listen to the original versions here)

We look forward to hearing the submissions.

    LOUISDEN HOMEWORKS!!! we're back!

Louis Den Beat Cypher 08 Spotlight - Budgie

Ahhh man what a day...some behind the scenes MADNESS going on with the beat cypher tonight (pretty much had to sort a backup plan for travel for the London people only to abandon it last minute..props to the postman on the late time phew!!!)

AITE!! Last up with the spotlights we got BUDGIE...the man with the smoothest beats and swagger off the meter!!

    1) Hey!!, please introduce yourself to everybody; let us know who you are what you do and how long you've been doing it!.
What up! my name's budgie, i make beats, dj, collect records, work in a record store and do anything i can that's music related.. I've been doing beats for about 7 or 8 years.

    2) Was there a defining moment (event / hearing a record etc) that led you into making beats / becoming a producer?.
Theres not one defining moment, it's mix of different music, people and events. My Dad has a record shop (www.honestjons.com) so he always played me alot of Jazz, Soul, Reggae and Hip-Hop as a little kid. My favorite track when I was really young was Masta Ace 'Me & the Biz', mainly because of the record cover and the crazy Biz voice, but I think it left a lasting impression. I also did piano lessons as a kid (hated it, just wanted a synth to make 'cool music'), then a few years later my music teacher at school recognised I had an ear for music and got me out of my maths lessons to do cubase lessons and I learned how to program drums and lay down chords. Around the same time I got some turntables and started collecting records when I was 13, and I actually thought this was all I needed to start sampling, so I had to wait til the next year to get my first sampler.

    3) What was your first peice of equipment and what were those beats like?, any interesting stories about things were doing to begin with / finding your feet?
My first sampler was the Boss SP505, kinda similar to the SP303 that Madlib uses, except my one has a little LCD screen. The beats I made on that were alright, but I was just learning and had no idea about how to get my beats to sound in reality, the way I heard them in my head. I'd basically pick a random record from my dads collection and chop it up. Eventually I had used up all 99 user save slots and didn't wanna delete any of the beats I had made so I got Reason, started doing all my stuff on there and I've never looked back.

    4) Whats the one bit of advice youd give to anyone starting out today?
Keep workin on it, don't get frustrated if you make a wack beat, just make another one and eventually you will make something worth listening to..

    5) What can heads expect from you at LOUIS DEN BEAT CYPHER?

    2) Was there a defining moment (event / hearing a record etc) that led you into making beats / becoming a producer?.
My brother got me into it and i always just liked hiphop/gangster shit so i wanted to do it and pull groupies

    3) What was your first peice of equipment and what were those beats like?, any interesting stories about things were doing to begin with / finding your feet?
I started using Ejay like alot of people did I'm sure? I hope! then I found Reason and thought this is fucking complicated but then learned and stuck with it I still use only reason I dont have any other equipment really.

    4) Whats the one bit of advice youd give to anyone starting out today?
Stick at it takes a while to get your name around and just make shit you actually like yourself also telling females your a producer usually works!

    1) Hey!!, please introduce yourself to everybody; let us know who you are what you do and how long you've been doing it!.
My name is David Webb | Young Dave | Chemo | Papa Chemo | Telemachus | Mick Tape | Cheembo Slice | DJ Bum Hands, and i paint with sound.

    2) Was there a defining moment (event / hearing a record etc) that led you into making beats / becoming a producer?.
Medina Green - Crosstown Beef, Jehst - 1979 (dont tell him that though)

    3) What was your first peice of equipment and what were those beats like?, any interesting stories about things were doing to begin with / finding your feet?
My first foray was when i used a mixer to play sped up drum breaks over classic fm and record them to tape, I'm sure you can imagine the results were somewhat erratic yet i was so impressed with myself at the time.

Then i started using Acid Pro 1 briefly and progressed to the MPC2000 which i used for 2-3 years, becoming quite proficient (even teaching a few people some MPC tips along the way!). I subsequently moved back to Acid Pro which i have been using ever since which has really shaped how I work. I have a real love-hate relationship with the MPC, I seem to buy one every year and sell it again after 6 months... I currently have a 2500 at home which im still undecided about... I need someone like Jaisu to show me the light!

    4) Whats the one bit of advice youd give to anyone starting out today?
Your arms are too short to box with gods.

    AND

Stay away from THE BELLTREE. Please. Please.

    5) What can heads expect from you at LOUIS DEN BEAT CYPHER?
Long legs, bad jokes and a shit beard.
